Flu Vaccine Injury Claims Rising

It's flu shot season, and there are plenty of good reasons to consider getting a flu vaccine. But it's also important to watch out for shoulder pain after being vaccinated.

While it's normal to feel some tenderness and mild pain after receiving a flu shot, if severe pain persists for several days, you may be experiencing SIRVA - shoulder injury related to vaccine administration.

Cases of SIRVA from flu shots are on the rise, the Wall Street Journal reported last year, with the U.S. Court of Federal Claims paying out more than $18 million to settle SIRVA claims since 2011. Claims are expected to continue to increase in 2016, with procedures being put in place to expedite SIRVA claims, according to the National Vaccine Information Center.

These SIRVA cases typically result from problems with how shots are administered, not the contents of the vaccine itself. If the shot is administered too high up on the arm, it may injure shoulder tendons or ligaments, resulting in lasting pain and possible nerve damage.

It's likely that increased awareness and ease of filing are contributing to the increase in SIRVA claims, so there's not necessarily new reason to fear getting a flu shot. Still, the uptick is a good reminder to take seriously any lingering pain after a flu shot.

If pain persists several days after receiving a flu shot, you should see a doctor to investigate whether your shot may have been improperly administered, and if so, to get the treatment you need. If it looks like your flu shot may have been improperly administered, an attorney can help advise you on making a claim through the National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program.
