Do You Have "Flu Shot Shoulder"?

Do you have "Flu Shot Shoulder"?

By David Schexnaydre, Esq.

Did you experience pain in your shoulder almost immediately after receiving a flu shot or other vaccine that was injected into your shoulder?  Has the pain lasted for more than six months?  If so, you probably have what I call "flu shot shoulder," but what the United States Government calls SIRVA (Shoulder Injury Related to Vaccine Administration).   You probably also have the right to make a claim against the Vaccine Injury Compensation Fund because flu shot shoulder, or SIRVA, is a recognized result of receiving the flu shot, and many other injected vaccines, injected in the shoulder muscle, or deltoid.

The medical names for the shoulder conditions that can occur after receiving a flu shot or some other vaccine injected in the shoulder are "adhesive capsulitis," (commonly referred to as "frozen shoulder"), "brachial neuritis," "tendonitis," "impingement syndrome," and even "rotator cuff tear with cortical irregularity."  In order to be a compensable claim under the Vaccine Injury Compensation Program, the shoulder pain must be almost immediate, and it must last for more than six months.  Sometimes physical therapy can remedy the condition, while sometimes surgery results.  Either way, a claim can be made; the value of the claims will just be different.  Obviously, the more medical treatment received and medical bills incurred, the higher the claim value.  In 2015, SIRVA claims were compensated by the Vaccine Injury Compensation Program in the $80,000 to $200,000 range, plus attorney's fees.

So, if you or a loved one experienced shoulder symptoms almost immediately after receiving a flu shot or other vaccine injected into the shoulder muscle, and the symptoms have lasted for more than six months, contact us for more information on the process of making a vaccine injury claim.
