Flu Shot Reaction Leaves Woman Disabled

Most people wouldn't think twice about getting an annual flu shot. The vast majority of flu vaccinations are safe, with no negative side effects. In some cases, though, patients experience side effects such as fever, arm soreness, fatigue and allergic reactions.

In rare instances, flu vaccines can trigger medical emergencies that require hospitalization. That was the case for a Florida woman who is still dealing with health problems triggered by a flu shot that was administered in 2013.

The flu shot triggered Guillain-Barré syndrome, which causes the body's immune system to attack the nerves.

Guillain-Barré syndrome is a rare disorder, the first symptoms of which are usually weakness and tingling in the extremities. The symptoms can quickly spread and potentially paralyze the whole body. Most people diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome have to be hospitalized.

While doctors don't know exactly what causes the disorder, it often occurs after a viral or bacterial infection, and flu shots have been known to trigger it.

Serious flu shot reactions can lead to disabling conditions, and anyone who experiences side effects after a vaccination should see a doctor as soon as possible.

In the case of the Florida woman, her vaccine injury has left her unable to work, so she looked into ways of getting financial help. She discovered the National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program, which provides compensation to vaccine injury victims.

We've often discussed this program on the Schexnaydre Law Firm blog. We also represent vaccine injury victims to help them obtain the compensation they need and deserve.
