It's Flu Season: Beware of Flu Shot Shoulder

Winter is just around the corner; kids are well into the school year; and for families throughout Louisiana, that combination means it's cold and flu season.

In fact, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, October is generally when the number of flu cases begins to increase.

The flu shot is a great way to prevent illness for yourself and others, but parents and anyone else getting a flu should be aware of the possibility of flu shot shoulder.

For good reason, doctors encourage patients to get flu shots. You can prevent yourself from getting sick, and you can help save lives by preventing the spread of the flu.

However, if a flu shot isn't administered properly, there is a real possibility of flu shot shoulder. This painful and potentially very serious injury is not caused by the contents of the syringe, but by the placement of the needle. If the needle is placed too high, it can cause inflammation and deterioration of the rotator cuff.

Flu shot shoulder is also known as SIRVA -- or shoulder injury related to vaccine administration.

The federal government created the National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program (NVICP) in 1986.

The NVICP was created for a number of reasons:

  • To ensure that we have an adequate supply of vaccines
  • To ensure that vaccine costs are stabilized
  • To provide a way for individuals injured by vaccines to receive compensation for the injury

You can learn more about the NVICP at Schexnaydre Law Firm's vaccine injury overview. We help vaccine injury victims in Louisiana obtain the compensation they need and deserve.
