Louisiana Program Trains Veterans to Start Businesses

A new program has been created to bolster the business opportunities for Louisiana veterans. The Louisiana Veteran Entrepreneurship Program (LVEP) is focused on the short-term and long-term business goals of veterans as they leave active duty.

The partnership that put the program together includes Louisiana Economic Development (LED), the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Louisiana National Guard, the Louisiana Business & Technology Center, the college of business at LSU, and Gov. John Bel Edwards.

Intensive Training, Plus Ongoing Business Counseling

Veterans who participate will go through an intensive "boot camp," followed by ongoing counseling from business partners. The program is expected to have more than 100 participants in its first year. Program goals include at least 30 percent of participating veterans starting new businesses, and collectively raising at least $5 million in startup capital.

A long-term goal is to produce 100 new jobs through businesses operated by veterans trained through LVEP.

The Program

Veterans leave military service with an array of skills relevant to launching and operating a business. LVEP is aimed at bolstering those skills, which include creative problem-solving, leadership, strategic planning, risk management and task execution.

Participants have to complete an application and screening process, followed by an online program lasting three weeks, followed by face-to-face training. Training will cover important steps in funding, launching and operating a business, plus other tools required to develop business ideas.

Training for the pilot program will start this summer and early fall in Baton Rouge, and in other parts of Louisiana, additional "boot camps" will take place in late 2017 and early 2018.

Legal Counsel for Business Startups

To protect their interests and guard against liabilities, business owners need skilled legal counsel throughout the life of the business. Choosing the right type of business structure is immensely important, as are contractual matters and efficient resolution of business disputes.
